Although there is a wide array of utensils that are available in Indian households, Indians, traditionally, do not use cutlery for eating and enjoying delicacies such as breads and curries. These types of food are more pleasantly consumed using the hand.Not all Indian dishes, however, should be eaten using the hand. If the food is a soup or stew such as a daal, spoons, of course, can be used. In addition, rice can be eaten using spoons, more so in formal occasions and settings such as in weddings or in restaurants, or when food is not served in rustic banana leaves. Traditional Indian cutlery did not recognize the use of knives and forks for eating, thereby limiting their use inside kitchens. Spoons were traditionally made out of wood and then evolved into metallic spoons especially when the thali (traditional Indian serving dish) became a staple in household tableware. In addition, spoons were used with a certain clasping motion whereas the forks were used to distribute foods from dishes served family style.
